Who are the Lions?

The Lions are men and women dedicated to serving those in need, whether in their own community or half-way around the world. In addition to humanitarian service, they enjoy fellowship and develop leadership skills.

History

Founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1917, by businessman Melvin Jones. Lions Clubs International has been dedicated to helping those less fortunate in their communities and around the world. In 1925, Helen Keller challenged the members to be "Knights of the Blind." "We Serve" became the association's official motto in 1954.

International Membership

Lions Clubs International has more than 44,600 clubs in 193 countries and geographical areas. These Lions Clubs have nearly 1.35 million men and women members serving their communities and the world at large.

Mission Statement

The Slogan

"Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nations Safety."

The Colors: Purple and Gold

To Lions, Purple stands for loyalty to country, friends, one's self and the integrity of mind and heart. It is the traditional color of strength, courage, and tireless dedication to a cause. Gold symbolizes sincerity of purpose, liberality in judgment, purity in life and generosity in mind, heart, and purse towards those in need.
